Casino games IV – type: Baccarat
September 19th, 2008An old gambling game, baccarat is similar to basset and faro games and is a popular casino card game. Historically supposed to be introduced in France from Italy during the close of 15th century, this casino game still continues to be popular among gamblers more tan 500 years later. Baccarat chemin de fer, baccarat banque and punto banco (or North American baccarat) are the three most widely played and accepted variation of this game. While punto banco is out and out a game of luck with cards dealt determining the course of each player’s moves, the other two variants of this game have an element of skill involved with both players having some choice in their play.
A game of baccarat is very simple and can be played by betting for only three possible results – Player, Banker and Tie. The valuation of hands in baccarat is interesting with cards with values from 2 to 9 are assigned face values and the ace is given point value of one, while the remaining four cards, number 10 and the face cards of king, queen and jack have value zero. Players calculate their score by adding the value of cards in their hands but ignoring any value in the ten’s digit. For example, if someone has a hand with card valuing 3 and 4, his score is 7, while if he has a hand holding 7 and 8, his score is 5 (and not 15). Moreover is he has cards valuing 4 and 6, his score amounts to zero, that is the worst possible score in this game whereas the highest possible score in baccarat that a player can have is nine.
Baccarat shot to fame in literature and movies with its association with James Bond, especially in the earlier version of Casino Royale where the character plays Baccarat chemin de fer in. In the latest version of the movie, however, the game was replaced by Texas Hold ‘em poker.
